WOMEN’S GROUP FROM JOMI DISTRICT BUILT AND MAINTAINS A HAND WATER PUMP

Pushkin-1 Village is one of the poorest and most drought-prone place of Yakkatut Jamoat, Jomi District. A women’s group called “Bahor” of 19 members sit in a circle and decided that they are able to solve these problem by building a hand water pump.

In past, the women and children were fetching and carrying water for about several hours a day from 2 km away from the nearest water source.

Now things are different in this village. The villagers drink clean water. The pump has given women more free hours and reduced the amount of water-borne diseases, with diarrhea being the leading cause of childhood death.

“We are trying to create a better future for our community. Men were proud of our work,” say the members of the group. They added that the hand water pump costs 600 Somoni (120 USD) and that the group protects the pump and it’s spare parts.

The DFID-funded Women’s Wealth & Influence project aims to increase women’s wealth and influence within their families and communities and is now in its third year of operation.
