Thursday 18 August 2016

Dushanbe – Save the Children is launching a new 18-month project with the European Commission's Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection department (ECHO) on “Inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction as a Way to Resilience” program to be implemented in Tajikistan.

Training for youth groups on child protection during emergencies

The objective of the "Inclusive DRR as a Way to Resilience" program is to strengthen resilience of communities in disaster-prone areas by reducing their exposure to disaster risks and fostering a culture of safety in Tajikistan.  The program started on 1st of March, 2016 and will be implemented in 15 villages of the Vahdat and Varzob districts; these villages are affected frequent natural disasters because of their geographical location. During the lifetime of the program, 11,180 people are expected to benefit,  including teachers and students of residential schools throughout the country, as well as community members and National and Regional In-service Teacher Training Institutes (TTI) in Tajikistan.

The program will develop guidelines on inclusive DRR with the aim to integrate them into the National and Regional In-service TTI training curriculum and courses in Tajikistan but also train national and regional trainers, school principals, deputies and In-service TTI trainers.

Community simulation exercises

Inclusive DRR will help the schools and communities to establish school-based and community level Response Teams and train the members of the response teams. The program will provide opportunities to implement simulation and mitigation works for residential institutions for children with disabilities as well as schools and communities of selected regions.  Members of the communities and local government authorities will develop and execute the mitigation works in their villages and schools, contributing to at least 40% of the overall cost.
