Women’s actions prevent domestic violence and create harmonious family environments in Rudaki District

Friday 1 July 2016

Family counselling, provided by four Rudaki District women’s groups “Sharifmo”, “Ganjina”, “Robiya” and “Hamsado” have prevented 14 divorces and reduced the occurrence of domestic violence.
Having demonstrated their capacity to improve the well-being of both their families and their communities these four women's groups have earned the respect of their peers. Seeking to negotiate for improved treatment by their husband's family, young women, especially daughters-in-law who have suffered domestic violence, greatly appreciated the support provided by these women groups.
Guided by a basic knowledge of Family Code the groups commenced family counseling in February 2016. Focused on families in which daughters-in-law were subjected to domestic violence, the groups met with the in-laws, explaining to each member the effect these abusive behaviors have on children and also informed them of their legal liability.

As a result of these conversations, attitudes toward the daughter-in-law improved and for 29 children, a happy family environment was restored.
Through role play, at the Cross Learning Visit in Rudaki District, held on June 2nd, 2016, women highlighted the power of unity through WGs participation. The importance of WGs in activities which work toward the prevention of domestic violence, the development of women’s rights awareness, the creation of employment opportunities and in just being a hand of hope for women in hopeless situations were emphasized.
